Hot isostatic pressing (HIP) is a manufacturing process that eliminates the porosity of metals and increases the density of many materials. This improves the mechanical properties of the material (fatigue strength, ductility, impact resistance) and machinability, i.e. the safety of the component is significantly increased by the HIP process.
When components are treated with the HIP process, internal voids and micro-porosities are eliminated through a combination of plastic deformation, flow and diffusion bonding of the material by the simultaneous application of heat and pressure.
The HIP process is used to significantly increase the technical properties of, for example, cast products, additively manufactured products, tools, motorsport components and aerospace components.
Powder Metallurgy
Powder metallurgy deals with the production of metal powders and their further processing. When combining PM and HIP, a powder is filled into a welded capsule. The capsule is welded as close to the final shape as possible in order to enable optimal use of the raw material "powder" and to work in a resource-efficient manner.
After filling, the capsule is sealed under vacuum and further compacted using the HIP - Hot Isostatic Pressing process to form a component that is used for further processing of the finished part.
